The Indian Phonographic Industry (IPI), the Association of Phonogram
Producers, was Established in 1936, and it was Instrumental in finalising the
Broadcasting Licence arrangement in India. Subsequently, IPI members decided to
form a specialised body to administer their Public Performance and Broadcasting
Rights, and so PPL came into being in 1941.
Incidentally, IPI changed its name to
The Indian Music Industry (IMI) in 1994.
The Phonographic Performance Ltd. (PPL) has been functioning as the Copyright
Society for Sound Recordings of its member music labels. After the 1994
amendments in copyright law, PPL was Registered with the Registrar of
Copyrights, Government of India in 1996, as the Copyright Society, permitted to
carry on business in Sound Recordings. |
